Between The Berms

Mar 2, 2011
The Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals pulled in 300 shooters this past weekend and for the fourth year in a row Bob Vogel, a full-time cop from Wapakoneta, Ohio, not only won his division, ESP, but again posted the top score among all shooters with a blistering 135.58 (16). Team Smith & Wesson's Gordon Carrell was Vogel's closest competition for overall honors, finishing 24.4 seconds behind while winning the SSP division with 159.98 (47). The other three division winners were all Team S&W members with David Olhasso atop the CDP division with 161.23 (35), Jerry Miculek winning ESR with 175.28 (57) and Josh Lentz taking SSR with 204.99 (49). Glock's Randi Rogers claimed the High Lady title with 193.26 (80). Gregg Garrett took High Senior with 178.96 (43). High International went to Juan Carlos Gonzalez Valdez with 199.24 (53). Tori Nonaka took High Junior with 209.46 (49). You can find the full results here. An interesting bit of buzz during the match was the rumor that Tori Nonaka would soon be joining Team Glock. Both Tori and her father, Aaron Nonaka, were seen in Glock's booth during SHOT Show talking with company execs. While neither Tori nor Aaron would confirm or deny the rumor - despite repeated questioning - one thing is for sure, Tori's rise through the women's ranks of USPSA, SCSA and IDPA would make her a welcome addition to Team Glock, especially after the departure of the top-ranked Jessie Abbate who now shoots for Team Leupold. A Note to Manufacturers: If this Glock rumor doesn't pan out, and your company has a shooting team, Tori should be at or near the top of your list of shooters to recruit.
CWO Chad Barber of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy explains the course of fire to shooters.
Semper Paratus is Latin for 'Always Ready' and is the official motto of the U.S. Coast Guard. And 'Always Ready' was exactly what you found on the Smith &Wesson range where the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's cadets were on hand running two of the match stages. CWO Chad Barber led a contingent of 16 from the Academy including 10 cadets from the Combat Arms Team, six of which shot the match. Smith &Wesson first invited the Coast Guard Academy to the match three years ago and now they are an integral part of the event. This year they not only designed a stage but also presented the colors at the awards banquet at the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Joyce Wilson announces the new Distinguished Master class at the S&W Indoor Nationals.
At the awards banquet - sponsored by NSSF - Joyce Wilson announced that the International Defensive Pistol Association was adding a new classification. The Distinguished Master class is made up of the division winners from the IDPA Nationals and Smith & Wesson Indoor Nationals for the last five years. The only way to make it into this new class is to win a division at one of these two matches, or come within 3% of the winner. Several shooters were presented plaques recognizing them as Distinguished Masters, including Bob Vogel who was the only one to be recognized as such in all three semi-auto divisions, CDP, ESP and SSP. If anybody sees Vogel reaching for a revolver please let IDPA know so they can prepare that plaque as well. One final note on S&W's match. I want to thank Paul Pluff, Tom Yost and Julie Golob for inviting me, and most importantly, letting me stuff my face at their banquet. I've been to a bunch of banquets and this one actually offered up great food. If you are thinking about shooting the match, by all means do so. Sure it's tough going up against great shooters, but the outstanding meal afterward goes a long way to soothing that savage beat-down Vogel gives you when you compare your score to his.
Zach Snow of NSSF presents officials from Rio Salado their Four Star rating.
The Rio Salado Sportsman's Club is well known throughout the competitive shooting community - especially the handgun segment. Well, recently everybody's favorite home-away-from-home range received a Four Star rating from the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Zach Snow, NSSF's manager of shooting promotions, visited the club and officially awarded the coveted rating. Spoiler Alert! Don't read this if you haven't yet watched last night's episode of Top Shot... After last week's elimination of Jermaine, the Blue team looked like they were going to turn on each other in their team meeting until Maggie Reese got them back on course with a few careful words. This week's challenge featured compound bows, and the Red team out-shot the Blue. While Blue team's Chris Tilley nailed his target on the first try, Maggie ran into difficulty as did others. Elimination came down to Maggie and Kyle Frasure shooting the compound bow from an elevated position at targets appearing for just 5 seconds. After falling behind, Maggie rallied back to tie 4-4, but ended the match 4-8 and was eliminated. Maggie's departure is a big let down for USPSA members who were rooting for the MultiGun National Champion to go a long way on the show. Now it's up to Tilley to carry the USPSA banner...and next week's returning experts of course, J.J. Racaza and BlakeMiguez.
The late Tom Sparacino was fixture at most major shooting competitions and beloved by his fellow shooters.
On a sad note, Tom Sparacino, an avid shooter and frequent competitor in ICORE, SCSA and USPSA events, passed away last week. ICORE's Ron Joslin said of Tom, "He was a true gentleman and ambassador of the shooting sports. Tom was one of those people who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. I will truly miss competing against him and the IRC and Steel Challenge will not be the same without his smiling face." - Paul Erhardt, Editor, the Outdoor Wire Digital Network Got shooting sports news?
