Between The Berms

Team S&W's husband and wife duo of Elliot and Annette Aysen. The couple that shoots together wins together.
Well the books are closed on another IRC and the winner's circle is packed with several familiar faces and a couple new one. This weekend's 20th Annual Smith & Wesson International Revolver Championship saw the obvious as Jerry Miculek once again, and for the 19th time, won the Open division and overall title. Though Rich Wolfe certainly made a strong enough run at World's Greatest Revolver Shooter, coming within 4.76 seconds with a spectacular performance on the Far & Near Standards, that next year promises to be an exciting match. Miculek's fellow Team Smith & Wesson shooter John Bagakis won his 4th Limited division title. Team Smith & Wesson's husband and wife one-two punch of Elliot and Annette Aysen both picked up titles with Annette winning the Women's Limited event and Elliot finishing 3rd in the division to claim the Senior Limited title. Breaking the S&W stranglehold on Limited division wins was 16-year-old Jesse Wills who shoots for the RangeLog shooting team. His mom Karla is probably posting on Facebook right now, "my son went to California for the weekend and all he got me was the Junior Limited IRC title to brag to my friends about." Of course, doing her own family proud, 14-year-old Janae Sarabia double dipped at the IRC winning the Women's Open title and, obviously, the Junior Open title...and she shoots for who? Oh yeah, Team Smith & Wesson. In the second year of ICORE's Classic division, Josh Lentz, who shot Limited last year, dominated the field winning 10 of 14 stages, and he too shoots for Team Smith & Wesson.
The IRC wasn't the only big match this weekend. The Double Tap Championship in Wichita Falls, Texas also took place this past weekend. The Double Tap is one of the largest matches on the USPSA calendar and always draws a solid group of shooters. This year 300 shooters competed in the match with Chris Anderson taking the Single Stack title, Kale Garretson Production, Russ Shaver Limited-10, Manny Bragg Limited and, of course, Sig's Max Michel dominating Open with 9 stages wins - and a 2nd, 3rd and 5th place stage finish to round out the match. Among the women, Rhonda Stonaker claimed the Production title and Glock's Randi Rogers took Limited. But of all the contests at the Double Tap, the women's Open match had to be the one to watch as Team Limcat's Athena Lee barely edged out Team Rudy Project's Valerie Levanza Rosales by just under a point - 0.9725 to be exact - to take the win. The two split stage with each winning 6 of the 12. Now here's the kicker...Athena was scored shooting Minor while Valerie was shooting Major. You can catch Athena in action at the Double Tap on YouTube where you can watch her shoot the entire match...in just 4:09 minutes. Mark your calendar... USPSA's CED Mid-Atlantic Sectional will take place June 11-12 in Dallastown, Pa. but the only way into the match is through the standby list as this match was filled a little over two weeks ago. The Area 5 Championship takes place June 16-19 at PASA Park in Barry Ill. Slots are still available for the Area 5 match and you can register online. For those looking to fill out their summer shooting schedule, USPSA offers a complete listing of upcoming matches. - Paul Erhardt, Editor, the Outdoor Wire Digital Network Got shooting sports news?
