A Glimpse into History: The Rhodesian Independence Struggle
In the late 1960s and 1970s, the nation of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) found itself in a fierce struggle for sovereignty. A colony of the British Empire, Rhodesia declared its independence from British rule on November 11,1965, sparking over a decade of complex guerilla warfare, and intense geopolitical debate. Known as the Bush War or Second Chimurenga, Rhodesian soldiers faced brutal conditions, challenging terrain, and relentless opposition from those seeking majority rule.
Innovation in Warfare:
Cutoff from the rest of the world, necessity drove invention for the Rhodesian military. From the creation of special mission units to advanced infantry tactics, and indigenous small arms, and equipment, the Bush War saw use of some of the most unique and effective tactics and equipment of the time. One such creation was the Rhodesian Brushstroke Camo.
Fighting for extended periods in the dense bush required effective camouflage tailored to the harsh terrain. Enter Rhodesian Brushstroke Camo. Comprised of bold, irregular brushstrokes in a mix of earthy green, brown and olive tones to mimic the vegetation, dry grass and shifting light found in Southern Africa. Unlike other camo patterns of the time, Rhodesian brushstroke was designed with depth and contrast helping the soldiers who wore it blend into their environment.
As effective as its military inventions and as valiant as its soldiers fought, the war in Rhodesia ended in defeat in 1979 and the subsequent establishment of Zimbabwe.
