In the micro-compact/moderate capacity pistol sweepstakes, I’m not really seeing a clear ‘winner.’ It seems to me that some prefer guns by brand or by familiarity with legacy guns of the type or by feature sets. Some are new enough that they’re still an unknown quantity – though you could argue that any sample of a product line isn’t really a known quantity – it’s the nature of the beast. For the past few months, my daily iron has been the S&W M&P Shield Plus. That’s primarily because of years of familiarity with the previous Shield line and because I shot it so well on the retiree’s qualification and on other benchmarks. Is it markedly better than the others I’ve tried? – I’m not sure I can say. It “cheated” by having an existing line of legacy guns, a pair of which I still routinely use. The others are “newer.” I can say that the guns I’ve tried – Ruger, Springfield Armory, Taurus GX4, G43X-48 – seem to be quite reliable across the board. They also tend to have a bit more snap than the regular service-compact pistols from the same makers. You have to determine if convenience trumps shootability. For me, it seems the Shield Plus straddles that line.
