Walk the Talk America (WTTA), a nonprofit dedicated to bridging the gap between mental health and responsible firearm ownership, has released a Suicide Prevention Month Resource Guide for September, offering gun owners, families, retailers, ranges, instructors and clinicians a set of practical tools to support prevention efforts.
The guide, distributed through WTTA's September newsletter, brings together five resources: the organization's Guns AND Mental Health Survey, open September 1 to 30; free and anonymous online mental health screenings; the WTTA Mental Health Plan, a self-guided prevention worksheet; updated guidance on responsible firearm storage; and a newly refreshed WTTA Toolkit for industry partners and supporters.
The Guns AND Mental Health Survey asks firearm owners to share their perspective on mental health, seeking support and firearm storage during periods of increased stress. The anonymous survey takes 8 to 10 minutes to complete, and results will be reported only in aggregate.
WTTA's responsible storage guidance addresses reducing unauthorized access to firearms by children, guests or potential thieves, and offers a framework for individuals who want additional time or distance from firearms during a difficult season. The organization emphasizes that storage approaches vary by household and circumstance.
"Prevention starts before a crisis. It starts with trusted conversations, practical tools and resources people are actually willing to use," said Michael Sodini, Founder, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Walk the Talk America. "This month we wanted to put those resources in one place for gun owners, families and the partners who support them."
