Indianapolis, IN - For the past 12 years, the buzz of an electric razor is heard in the halls of the Archery Trade Association (ATA) show floor. Hundreds of show attendees gather to watch hair fall in a ceremony dubbed "The Baldy Awards" to benefit the Arnold S. Leonard (ASL) Cancer Research Fund. National spokesperson, Brian "Pigman" Quaca, host of Pigman: The Series, exclusively on Sportsman Channel, is kicking off the event with Michele Eichler of Muzzy Products and event organizer Rob Evens and Dr. Arnold S. Leonard of the ASL Cancer Research Fund at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13 at the main atrium of the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Those volunteers who offered to have their head shaved to raise funds for cancer research and be inducted into "Baldies" fame include: Tim Mangum of Muzzy Products Corp, Eric and Curt Price of Lumenok, and David Blanton of the Realtree Outdoors family.
"This is definitely a 'don't-miss' event at the ATA show. We look forward to not only the pomp and circumstance that surrounds inducting these volunteers in our fraternity of "baldy" outdoorsmen, but also of raising the funds Dr. Leonard and Dr. Saltzman need to take their research to the next level," said ASL Cancer Fund spokesperson, Rob Evans. "We usually raise $50,000 at this event, but 2010 looks to be a phenomenal year for us and with the support of individuals and companies we may push over $75,000."
"I've watched this event for several years and am honored to be the national spokesperson for what is truly a ground-breaking event in cancer research. We are changing the landscape of what we know about cancer. And let's be honest, I can't wait to help shave those heads!" said Brian "Pigman" Quaca, host of Pigman: The Series on Sportsman Channel.
In the past 12 years, over $700,000 has been raised by the "Baldies" to fund cancer research by Drs. Arnold S. Leonard and Dan Saltzman at the ATA Show, whose research is conducted at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. According to their website, www.aslcancerfund.org, they have "developed a genetic engineered bacteria to carry a lymphokine gene (human interleukin-2 gene), which stimulates the immune system. This organism will naturally track to the liver, spleen, lymph of the GI tract, and to tumors. It thus specifically targets tumors with tumor killing immune cells."
If you miss the event on Wednesday, be sure to visit with the ASL Cancer Fund national spokesperson, Brian "Pigman" Quaca and event organizer, Rob Evans at the Fatal Attraction booth, #1854, to learn more about the Doctors' research.
