(Grand Island, Nebr.) — For Tate Streater, winning the 2019 National Rifle League Championship and points race was as simple as hitting his own personal easy button: the A-Tip™ Match bullet from Hornady®.
The Hornady® sponsored shooter from Oklahoma won the NRL Championship on Dec. 7-8 in Navasota, TX. The championship, which featured 18 stages that tested shooters’ ability to engage targets at various distances out to 1,100 yards with different directions of fire, wrapped up the NRL’s third season.
Streater won the event shooting the 6 mm 110 gr A-Tip™ Match bullet in a 6 mm BRA cartridge using 30.6 Varget powder.
He was one of a group of shooters who received early access to A-Tip™ bullets, obtaining his first batch in October 2018.
“It was very evident during my testing that these bullets were going to be an easy button,” Streater said. “Everything I tried with them shot great no matter the powder charge or seating depth.”
Streater had been shooting 6mm 108 gr ELD® Match bullets from Hornady® but began using the 6mm 110 gr A-Tip™ exclusively in April of this year. He shot A-Tip™ through the remainder of the season in competitions such as the Hornady® Precision Rifle Challenge and the Precision Rifle Series Finale.
“In our game, there are a ton of variables that you can’t always control. With these bullets, I have been able to run the same load throughout the life of the barrel with great results,” he said. “Without a doubt, the best thing about the 110 gr A-Tip™ is that it is super consistent and easy to get to shoot well. It’s just a bonus that the aluminum tip is sexy.”
Streater, who has been shooting rifles competitively since 2013, was pleasantly surprised by how well A-Tip™ Match bullets performed.
“They have a great BC without sacrificing anything,” he said. “They are super consistent and easy to keep in a node. They don’t require constant tinkering in order to shoot well throughout the life of the barrel.”
“When it comes to long-range shooting, consistency across the board is king,” said Jayden Quinlan, Hornady® lead ballistic engineer for A-Tip™ Match. “From a design standpoint, on these bullets, we’ve spent a ton of time and effort in making every aspect of them consistent.”
Their performance in competition is proof enough for Streater.
“This bullet has taken the precision rifle world by storm and for good reason,” Streater said. “I’d be willing to bet a large sum of money that it was the winningest bullet in the precision rifle world in the second half of the 2019. That should speak for itself.”
Asked if he planned to continue shooting A-Tip™, he said, “Absolutely! They are the best bullet on the market in their class.”
A-Tip™ Match bullets feature an aluminum tip that’s precision machined and longer than polymer tips. That moves the center of gravity and enhances inflight stability, resulting in tighter groups and reduced drag variability. In addition, A-Tip™ bullets are sequentially packaged for the ultimate in consistent performance.
