James Fox of Team Berger captured his fourth Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) National Service Rifle Championship title and his second consecutive championship, finishing with an impressive aggregate score of 2371-90X.

The CMP National Highpower Rifle Championship was held July 20-25 at Camp Perry, Ohio, drawing 353 competitors from across the country to compete in one of the premier events in service rifle shooting.

Fox reflected on the history of the championship and the challenges competitors faced this year, "The CMP National Highpower Rifle Championships was officially launched in 2025 in Camp Perry, Ohio and is shot over three days with four different stages: standing slow fire, sitting rapid fire, prone rapid fire, and prone slow fire. Each day is worth a total of 800 possible points, with each stage worth 200 points.

This course of fire benefits the consistent marksman who can overcome the challenging conditions Camp Perry is often known for. This year, we had very difficult conditions during the first two days, with morning winds of 10 to 15 mph while shooting the standing stage. Those winds can buffet your position back and forth, and it is not uncommon to see your rifle move from off target left to off target right and vice versa.

I was somehow able to work through the windy conditions and shoot a 197-5X on the first day and a 198-2X on the second day, giving me a significant advantage over the rest of the field. That lead helped on the final day when I made several small mistakes during the aggregate. Despite those mistakes, I was fortunate enough to win the championship for a second year in a row, beating 352 other competitors using a Service Rifle."

Fox trained and competed with Berger 223 Remington 77 Grain OTM Tactical ammunition during the 200-yard slow-fire stage, as well as the 200- and 300-yard rapid-fire stages. For the 600-yard slow-fire stage, he used handloads featuring Berger 22 Caliber 80.5 Grain Fullbore Target bullets, Lapua 223 Rem. brass, and Vihtavuori N140 powder.

In addition to winning the National Service Rifle Championship, Fox posted an outstanding overall performance throughout the National Matches, earning:

• 2nd Place – President's 100 Match
• 3rd Place – National Trophy Individual Match
• 2nd Place – CMP Trophy Matches Championship (Mountain Man Trophy)
• 3rd Place – Four-Man Team Match
