Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) State Director, Colleen Callahan has officially notified the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) that the US Open Trapshooting Tournament (June 2-6) and The Grand American and AIM Youth Championships (July 30 - August 14) will be allowed to take place at IDNR’s World Shooting and Recreational Complex (Sparta, Illinois) this year.
Due to the pandemic, these tournaments were held at the home of the Missouri Trapshooters Association, Linn Creek Missouri during 2020.
ATA Executive Director Lynn Gipson commented that “ATA officials and members were grateful that the Missouri officials graciously allowed us to use their facility to host the Grand American in 2020. The shoot was a tremendous success and an economic boost to the Lake of the Ozarks region, but honestly, there’s no place like home, and we’ll be back home this year”.
Despite wars, economic collapses and yet another 1917 world pandemic, the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships have been contested every year without interruption since 1899, and that record will remain intact this year.
About the ATA - The ATA serves as the faithful protector of trapshooting and its mission is to promote and oversee the sport throughout the world. Established in 1899, the ATA is the oldest and the largest clay target shooting organization in the world. This non-profit organization governs the sport's rules and regulations. In addition, the ATA actively seeks ways to further enhance the sport and increase participation. Annually, ATA members participate in 6,000 plus registered tournaments and shoot at more than 60 million targets. The ATA encompasses an official youth program, as well. AIM, representing Academic, Integrity, and Marksmanship, serves to provide a safe and positive experience with firearms and registered trapshooting for youth members.
